Contact Us

Clover Computing offers a wide range of services for your small business! We install and maintain workstations, servers, networks, applications, backup, security, voice over IP, and much more.

Small businesses have special hardware and software needs, specific training and usability concerns, and unique regulatory obligations, all of which must be met on time and within budget. That's why we don't sell a set of cookie-cutter solutions. Instead, we study your company's special computing requirements, then tailor a unique solution that meets your company's needs.

We have no contracts with any hardware or software company. We know that both commercial software and Open Source programs may be useful to your business, so we're happy to install and service Windows, Linux or MacIntosh, plus web-based programs that will run on any operating system.

Our philosophy is embodied in our mission statement: "We will make computing easy, inexpensive and empowering for our customers."

WORKSTATIONS

E-mail, Internet browser, and an office suite. That's your basic workstation. Customer relations software, instant messaging, and accounting programs are also very common. Most workstations run at least one piece of specialty software. A doctor, for example, uses MediSoft to bill insurance companies. Many mechanics use Mitchell Estimator to price repairs.

How do you build the right workstation for your business? Do you need complex groupware like Outlook or Evolution, or will a simple mail program meet all your needs? Will you be creating complex spreadsheets and presentations, or do you just need to write some letters? Do you create your own advertising and publishing? Are your needs modest, or do you have multiple departments with different software requirements? Most important, how do you build the perfect workstation without breaking your budget?

Contact us. We'll design the right workstation for your business - and your budget.

SERVERS

If your business uses multiple computers, you probably have at least one server. A server is a computer which provides other computers with information or services. A print server controls access to printers and faxes from multiple computers. File servers store all the files for an entire office, providing backup services and access to all your office's files from any computer. E-mail servers route e-mail to and from multiple clients - sometimes thousand of clients for each server - to other servers on the Internet.

Many programs run on a "client/server" model. Such a program may have multiple users on multiple workstations, but the program itself runs on a single server. TinyERP, for example, is an accounting program tied to a database and a webserver. TinyERP users from a single company might be in several different cities, all logged in over the Internet, all running the same program on the same computer.

What are your company's server needs? Can your servers be made more efficient? Do they back up your data properly? Are they running the right software? Can you save money by running Linux on your servers?

Contact us with your questions about servers. We're here to help.

NETWORKS

A good network is essential for every modern business. Even a shoestring business that operates over dialup needs that network connection to be reliable and secure. If you're using client-server software, VOIP or running a networked backup, your network is even more important.

What kind of network do you need? Can you get by with an inexpensive wireless network on a residential router, or do you need gigabit speeds running on powerful routers and switches? How much security do you need? Must you meet a security standard like HIPPA or PCI DSS? What can you afford?

APPLICATIONS

The mechanic I serve pays thousands of dollars each year for a single, specialized business application. I run Clover Computing on free software. Which of us does it right?

Simply put, we both got it right.  My mechanic needs high-level manuals for every car, domestic and foreign, built after 1960. He gets this information from an expensive suite of billing and repair programs. His business needs only two more applications; a web browser for buying parts online and the very basic word processor built into Windows.

On the other hand, I started on a shoestring, with a Pentium III laptop running Linux. I use Open Office for my documents and spreadsheets, Firefox for browsing the 'Net, Thunderbird for e-mail, GIMP for art and photo editing, Scribus for publishing, and GnuCash for all my accounting needs. Each of these full-featured programs is absolutely free.

The point is very simple; each business is unique, with unique needs for processing information. Some companies need all the complexity of Microsoft Office, while others need only a phone.

Each business has a unique budget - and you know more about that than I do.

Contact us. We'll help pick and price the applications you need.

BACKUP

Your business data is too important to risk. Before you buy software or hardware for even the smallest business, make sure that good backups are part of your IT strategy.

There have been two important developments in the world of data backup, and both benefit small businesses. The most important development is the changing cost. Ten years ago a backup system for even the smallest of businesses, running a single computer, ran in the neighborhood of three hundred dollars. These days, one can purchase an adequate data backup system for less than a hundred dollars.

The other important advance in the world of backup is the great variety of backup methods now available. Ten years ago, unless you had a gigantic budget, you bought a tape drive. Period. Now you can back up on USB keys, a second hard drive, a DVD, a CD, a tape drive, or directly to the Internet. But even with all these alternatives, you still need a backup strategy and a storage strategy for the backups you've made.

Contact us for all your backup needs.

SECURITY

Spyware, viruses, crackers, trojans, adware, malicious web pages, software that phones home, "social engineering," and the dreaded "inside job." Sometimes it seems like the list of security threats is endless.

Every operating system out there is advertised as "secure," even if it's got bigger holes than the Titantic. Worse, there are dozens of anti-virus and firewall programs to chose from. Obviously one if them is best, right? Or maybe not. Don't forget that your routers and servers are also part of the security picture. Is your physical plant secure? And what about the human element?

Contact us if you're feeling insecure.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Ultimately, you need a system that "just works." At Clover Computing, we believe in systems that "just work." You shouldn't have to babysit your computer system, you shouldn't have to worry about it. The system should just work for both power users and the most clueless newbie. We work hard and smart to make sure your system has high uptime and good ease of use.

You need computer systems that don't hurt the bottom line. At Clover Computing, we work hard to make computing less expensive. Whether that means using free or Open Source software, ugrading your computers instead of buying new ones, or designing systems that need less maintenance, we're here to make computing cheaper.

Using a computer should be empowering. At Clover Computing, we believe you should be able to easily, transparently, and securely move data from one computer to another, from one application to another, and from one operating system to another. In computing terms, this is freedom. This is power. So we're against software that "phones home." We're against software that forces your data into proprietary formats. We're against software that changes formats just to make you upgrade to the next version. It's your computer system. Shouldn't you be the boss?
